Module 13 Overview of Communication Skills in Social Work
Three things learned from the Overview of Communication Skills in Social Work training tutorial was:
1.) Helped me realize how important the different communication skills are. To be an effective Social Worker I need to work on my communication skills, especially those concerning listening, language, reflecting, non verbal communication, empathy, silence, asking questions, observation, and explaining. By finding the items in the above list that I have problems with I can work on it to ensure that I will be able to better communicate with my clients.
2.) I learned from the steps (Referral; Assessment; Planning & Arranging; Review;Records & Report writing; Case Conferences & Discussions; On going work; Endings: Case transfer & closure; and Empowering service users) in the pathway to Social Work procedures to ensure the client gets the best out of the services offered. I liked how each step of the pathway had a Social worker or client discussing their insight of their experience. Some were good and some were bad experiences. It is important to find the right fit that will successfully help the person. That's why I like the option of transferring cases, the client feel more comfortable with another person and have a positive Social Work experience.
3.) I liked learning from the 5 professionals experiences to communication in social work. This section looked at the importance of building trust with the client, making sure they are involved to ensure they are achieving their goals from the services provided, importance of two way communication, and respect. By ensuring that the client is comfortable, feels respected, and appreciated, they may discuss their life issues with comfort knowing they are in a safe place and will not be hurt or made fun off.
I plan on utilizing what I learned in this overview by evaluating myself and working on the areas of communication I am lacking in. I want to be able to help my clients work through their problems and feel comfortable talking to me. I don't want them to hold the painful memories or hurts inside. I want to help them release any pain, anger, or resentments. Help them to become a empowered person and giving them tools to deal with daily stresses.
I did not do well on the quiz one right out of three questions. Found it interesting that there are 24 language translation available in the 2001 census and 300 different languages spoken by children in London, England.
