Three informative things I learned this week in Studying Social Injustice is:
1) The top 5 Social Justice Issues Facing Social Workers today from the Social Work Today Volume 7, No. 2, 24. was: Celebrating Diversity; Child Welfare; Healthcare Reform; Poverty and Economic Injustice; and Affordable Housing. In this class as well as reading this article, I have realized the long way we have come on these issues and also the long way we have to go. The policies in place have improved or lessened the above issues, yet have not solved the continuing problems. It will take us as Social workers to speak out for people in need as well as us as human beings to care for people in need.
2) The Video 'Social Justice-What is Justice? What is Social Justice?' by "Rye Ty" presented an interesting animated way to discuss this topic. Rawl's defined Justice as fairness. The video than discussed social justice as the fairness of oppression, discrimination, and interpression. The importance of resources, rights, benefits, duties, and burdons. As a Social Worker we need ensure that our work also protects social justice of the individual we are working with maintaining human dignity and self worth.
3) The Video "Social Justice: Good People" put to a Jack Johnson song, poses the question 'Where did all the good people go?' I believe there are many good people in this world. The person may not be in the public limelight. They are the individuals behind the scenes. They are helping people in ways that matter most. Soup kitchens open to provide food to those in need, shelters to house people that are homeless, clothing donated to help cloth others, etc. This Country would be in even worse shape if it would not be for those who have the drive to help and improve lives of those in need. I hope as a Social Worker I will be able to supply the resources to help someone in need improve their circumstances.
